Moving to Italy

There are many legal requirements for moving to Italy, as it is a country that is famous for its excessive degree of bureaucratic government and plurality of forms and documentation required for accomplishing any kind of process. Citizens from several countries are allowed into Italy for ninety days as tourists without needing any visa beforehand, the United States among them. Italy is one of the fifteen countries included on the Schengen Visa which admits entry into all of them.

Anyone staying with friends more than three days is legally required to report their location to the police on penalty of about 220 Euros, although this rule is often ignored. Members of other European Union countries can look for work for 90 days after arrival in Italy, and if they find it they can apply for residency permit.

Others wishing to work in Italy will need to get the appropriate visa from outside Italy. There are many types of visas available to enter Italy for different reasons including tourist, business, religious, diplomat, domicile, joining family member, self employed, artist, medical care, mission, student, sports, re-entry, transit, and visiting family. Much documentation is required for getting a visa, including proof of financial resources.
